The seven details for sales under $1,000
For a taxable sale under $1,000 the ATO asks for enough information to establish that the document is intended to be a tax invoice, the seller's identity, the seller's ABN, the date of issue, a brief description of what was sold including the quantity and price, the GST amount, and the extent to which each sale is taxable. From $1,000 the invoice must also show the buyer's identity or ABN, and the checks warn when it is missing.
GST-free items and GST-inclusive prices
When one invoice mixes taxable and GST-free items, each taxable item has to be clear, along with the GST and the total payable. Untick Taxable on GST-free lines, such as a box of fresh fruit, and say GST-free in the description. If you enter prices including GST, the totals show the GST contained in them, and when the GST is exactly one eleventh of the total, a statement that the total includes GST is enough.
Questions
When must I give a customer a tax invoice?
If a customer asks for one, you must provide it within 28 days of the request, unless the sale is $82.50 or less including GST.
Can I email the tax invoice as a PDF?
Yes. A tax invoice does not have to be on paper; a PDF sent by email is fine as long as it contains all of the required information.
What is a recipient-created tax invoice?
In some industries the buyer issues the tax invoice instead of the seller, under a written agreement between them. This template is for invoices that you issue yourself as the seller.
