Software engineer cover letter example

Many software engineering applications make the cover letter optional, which is exactly why a short, specific one stands out. This example shows a developer's results in numbers, their testing habits and a real reason to join the company, in four paragraphs a hiring manager can read in a minute. Open it in the letter tab, replace the made-up figures and link your code where it helps.

No sign-up to write and check, and downloads are free with a free account. Your documents stay in this browser; text goes online only when you press an AI button.

What engineering managers look for

  • The stack you use, matched to the job ad
  • A result with a number: speed, conversion, reliability or cost
  • How you work: tests, code review, small releases
  • One sentence on the product or engineering culture you want to join
  • A link to code, a project or writing you are proud of
  • No repeat of your whole resume

The example letter

Every figure in it is made up. It is already picked in the letter tab above: press Use this example letter, then fill in the gaps in square brackets.

I am applying for the Software Engineer position at [company]. I build web applications that are fast, tested and easy to maintain, and I enjoy the part of the job where a slow or confusing page becomes a simple one that customers can use without thinking twice.

In my current role I moved our checkout to a single page, which lifted completed orders by 9% in three months. I also cut average page load time from four seconds to 1.8 seconds by splitting large scripts, compressing images and caching API responses. I write unit and integration tests as I go, which raised test coverage on our main service from 41% to 78%, and I review code with two junior developers every week. Since we added automated checks to every pull request, production incidents after releases have fallen by roughly half, and on-call weeks are much quieter.

[company] appeals to me because [one specific reason: a product, a value or a recent project of [company] that you admire]. I want to work where engineers care about the people using the software, and where good habits such as small releases, code review and clear documentation are treated as part of the job rather than optional extras. I also want to keep learning from experienced colleagues.

I would bring clear code, honest estimates and steady delivery to [company] from the first sprint. I would welcome the chance to talk about how I could help your product team, and thank you for considering my application.

When a cover letter matters in tech

For a large company with a set hiring process, the resume and interviews do most of the work and a letter is often skipped. A letter earns its place when you are changing careers, applying to a small company or a startup where the founder reads every application, relocating, or reaching for a role a little beyond your experience. Then three short paragraphs can explain what the resume cannot.

Results engineers believe

Use measures your future colleagues use: page load time, error rates, conversion, test coverage, deployment frequency or hours saved for a team. Say what you changed and how, as in 'cut average page load time from four seconds to 1.8 seconds by splitting large scripts and caching API responses'. A claim without a number, such as 'improved performance', is easy to skip.

Keeping it short and linked

Engineers skim. Keep each paragraph to four or five lines, put the most relevant result first, and link to a repository, a demo or a write-up rather than describing every project. If the application form has a text box instead of an upload, paste the middle two paragraphs and cut the rest.

Questions

Should I send a cover letter for a software engineering job?

Send one when the application asks for it, when it is optional and you have something the resume cannot say, or when a person rather than a system is clearly reading applications. Otherwise a sharp resume and a good portfolio carry more weight.

Should I list every programming language I know?

No. Mention the languages and tools from the job ad that you have used in real work, and leave the full list to the skills section of your resume.

How do I write a cover letter for my first developer job?

Swap job results for project results: a project with real users, a contribution to open source, a hackathon entry or an internship. Explain what you built, the tools you chose and what you learned, and link the code.

Can the AI write a cover letter from my resume?

Yes. Paste the job ad and press Draft the letter with AI; it writes from the roles and achievements in your resume and leaves placeholders where it needs a figure. Each draft counts as one AI action, and you edit it before you send it.
