Academic cover letter example
An academic cover letter is read by a committee looking for a colleague: someone whose research fits the department, who can teach its courses and who will contribute beyond both. This example for an early-career lecturer covers teaching, research, grants and fit in four paragraphs, as a starting point you expand for the post. Open it in the letter tab and add the department and your own record.

I am writing to apply for the Lecturer in Ecology vacancy at [company]. I am an early-career lecturer in my field with three years of university teaching and an active research agenda, and I aim to make demanding material clear, relevant and open to students from every background and level of preparation.
I currently teach about 180 hours a year across four undergraduate modules and one master's module, with cohorts of up to 150 students, and my modules receive average student satisfaction scores of 4.4 out of 5. I redesigned a second-year methods course around weekly applied tasks, which raised the pass rate from 78% to 90%. I have published four peer-reviewed articles, two as lead author, and I was co-investigator on a two-year grant from a national research council. I also supervise eight undergraduate dissertations a year and helped design a new interdisciplinary module now taken by 90 students each year.
The department at [company] attracts me because [one specific reason: a research group, a teaching approach or a recent initiative of [company] that fits your work]. I value places where teaching and research inform each other, where colleagues share course design, and where early-career staff are mentored towards larger grants and publications.
I would bring committed teaching, a growing research programme and willing service to the department. Thank you for considering my application; I would welcome the chance to present my work and discuss how it could contribute to your plans.
US and UK academic letters differ
In the US a faculty cover letter usually runs one to two pages and comes with a research statement and a teaching statement, sometimes with a statement on contributions to diversity or community. In the UK most universities use an application form with a supporting statement that answers the person specification point by point, plus a covering letter of about a page. In India posts follow UGC eligibility rules such as NET or a PhD, so state which you hold early on.
Expanding this example for a full application
The four paragraphs here are a short version. For a full letter, split the second paragraph into one on research, with your main findings and the next project, and one on teaching, with the courses you could take on and your approach. Then use the department paragraph to name the groups, centres or programmes you would connect with.
Teaching evidence that persuades
Committees look for evidence, not philosophy. Course design, pass rates, student feedback scores and the size of the cohorts you have taught all count, as does supervising dissertations or theses. If you hold a teaching qualification, such as a postgraduate certificate in higher education, name it.

Questions
How long should an academic cover letter be?
In the US, one to two pages is common for faculty posts; in the UK, about a page alongside the supporting statement. Follow any length the advert gives, because committees notice when it is ignored.
Should I mention specific faculty members?
Yes, when there is a genuine connection, such as overlapping research or a course you could teach together. One or two names with a reason are enough; a long list reads as flattery.
Is a cover letter the same as a research statement?
No. The letter introduces you and argues for your fit with this post. The research statement goes deeper into your past work and future plans, and the letter should point to it rather than repeat it.
Can I use this letter for a postdoc application?
Yes, with a shift in emphasis: focus on the project and the lab, the methods you bring and what you want to learn, and shorten the teaching paragraph to a sentence or two.
