Paralegal cover letter example
Lawyers hire paralegals they can rely on with deadlines, documents and research, so a paralegal cover letter should read like proof of those three things. This example, for a paralegal with four years in commercial litigation, shows a caseload, an e-discovery review and a clean deadline record in four paragraphs. Open it in the letter tab and add the firm’s name and your own figures.

I would like to be considered for the Litigation Paralegal position at [company]. I am a paralegal with four years of experience in commercial litigation and contract work, and I help lawyers move faster by keeping case files in order, research focused and every deadline visible well before it arrives.
I currently support three partners on a caseload of around 40 active matters, preparing court bundles, chronologies, indexes and witness statement drafts for review. I carry out legal research on case law and legislation and summarise it in short notes, and I draft standard letters, contracts and disclosure lists. On one dispute I managed an e-discovery review of 85,000 documents with an outside vendor, applying search terms that reduced the review set by 60% and cut review costs accordingly. I keep a deadline diary for all filings and limitation dates, and no deadline has been missed on my matters in four years.
I would like to work at [company] because [one specific reason: a practice area, a type of client or a recent matter that [company] has made public]. I value teams where paralegals are trusted with substantial work, where supervision is clear, and where accuracy and confidentiality are taken seriously at every stage of a matter.
I would bring careful drafting, organised files and steady attention to deadlines to your team. Thank you for considering my application; I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how I could support your lawyers and clients.
Qualifications to mention, US and UK
In the US many paralegals hold a certificate or degree from a programme approved by the American Bar Association, and some add a voluntary credential such as NALA's Certified Paralegal or NFPA's Registered Paralegal. In the UK the title is not regulated; CILEX qualifications and paralegal diplomas are common, and some firms recruit law graduates as paralegals. Name yours early, because it is often a screening requirement.
Showing accuracy rather than claiming it
Every paralegal says they are detail-oriented. Show it instead: the number of matters you track, the size of the bundles you prepare, a review where your search terms cut the document set, or a deadline diary with no missed dates. One specific example persuades more than a list of adjectives.
Match the firm and the practice area
Firms hire paralegals into a practice group, so mirror the posting's area and tools, such as litigation support software, a case management system or a citation style. If you are moving from one area to another, say which skills carry over, such as research or drafting, and what you have done to learn the new area.

Questions
Do I need a paralegal certificate to apply?
Not always. Some US firms require a certificate or degree, while others hire for experience. Read the posting; if it lists a certificate as preferred rather than required, show equivalent experience in the letter.
Should a paralegal cover letter mention specific cases?
Describe the type and scale of matters, not client names or confidential details. 'A contract dispute with 85,000 documents in review' shows the experience without disclosing anything you should not.
How formal should the letter be?
Formal and concise. Address it to a named partner or recruiting manager if the posting gives one, use a standard business letter layout, and proofread twice: a typo in a paralegal's letter gets noticed.
Can I use this letter for a legal assistant job?
Yes, with changes. Legal assistant roles often weigh diaries, billing and client contact more heavily, so move those duties forward and shorten the research and e-discovery detail.
