Nursing student cover letter example
A nursing student applying for a first post is asked to show readiness rather than years of experience: the placements you completed, the care you gave under supervision and the habits that keep patients safe. This example for a final-year student covers all three in four paragraphs. Open it in the letter tab, add the hospital or programme name, and replace the made-up figures with your own.

What a new-graduate nurse letter should cover
- Your degree or diploma, when you finish and when you can register
- Placement settings and hours, with the most relevant one first
- A specific moment of safe practice, such as an early escalation
- Communication skills, for example structured SBAR handovers
- An improvement or audit project, with its result
- Why this ward, hospital or residency programme

I would be glad to be considered for the Newly Qualified Staff Nurse position at [company]. I am a final-year nursing student completing my degree this year, and I am ready to move from supervised placements to a graduate post where I can keep learning while giving patients safe, attentive and compassionate care.
Across my course I have completed more than 2,300 hours of clinical placement in medical, surgical, community and paediatric settings. On my final placement, a 28-bed respiratory ward, I managed the care of up to six patients a shift under supervision, including medication rounds, observations, wound dressings and care plans. I gave structured handovers using the SBAR format, and my practice assessor noted my early escalation of a deteriorating patient. I also completed a project on infection control that raised hand hygiene audit scores on the ward from 82% to 94% in eight weeks, and my documentation was praised for being clear and complete.
I would like to begin my career at [company] because [one specific reason: its preceptorship or residency programme, a specialty or a value of [company] that matters to you]. I am looking for a team that supports new nurses with clear supervision, regular feedback and protected time to build confidence and skills.
I would bring a careful, willing and caring approach to every shift, and I will be eligible to register once my results are confirmed. Thank you for considering my application; I would welcome the chance to meet the team.
Registration and licensing, country by country
Say when you will be able to practise. In the UK that means registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and pre-registration programmes include at least 2,300 hours of practice learning, which is why that figure appears in the example. In the US, new graduates pass the NCLEX-RN and apply for a state licence. In India, nurses register with their State Nursing Council after a B.Sc Nursing or GNM. Name the step you have reached in one plain sentence.
Turning placements into evidence
List placements by setting rather than by date, and start with the one closest to the post. Then pick one moment that shows judgement: a deterioration you recognised and escalated, a family you supported or a medication error you caught. Describe what you noticed, what you did and the outcome, without any detail that could identify the patient.
Preceptorship and residency programmes
Many employers run structured first-year programmes for new nurses, called preceptorship in the UK and nurse residency in the US. Mention the programme by name if the employer has one, and say what you want from it, such as protected learning time or rotations; it shows you read about the post instead of sending the same letter to every hospital.
The new-graduate nurse resume to send with it
Use the same evidence on one page: your degree and registration status first, then placements with settings and hours, clinical skills and any audit or improvement project. Recruiters for new-graduate and residency programmes read both documents, so keep the figures identical. The resume builder has a registered nurse example to start from.

Questions
Should a nursing student cover letter mention grades?
Mention them only if they are a strength or the employer asks. Most nurse managers care more about your placement feedback, your safe practice and how you work in a team than about your exact marks.
How do I write about patients without breaking confidentiality?
Leave out names, ages, bed numbers, dates and anything else that could identify someone. Describe the situation in general terms, such as 'a patient on a respiratory ward', and focus on what you noticed and did.
Can I apply before my registration or licence comes through?
Yes. Many employers recruit final-year students months in advance. Say when you expect to finish and to register or sit the licensing exam, and that you will send proof as soon as you have it.
How long should a nursing cover letter be?
One page, or about 250 to 350 words. If the employer uses an application form with a supporting statement instead, use the same evidence but answer its headings in order.
