Markdown to Word
Convert Markdown (.md) to a Word .docx with heading styles, lists, tables, code, footnotes and LaTeX maths as editable Word equations. Free, no upload.
Runs in your browser — nothing is uploadedConvert Markdown into a Word document that looks written in Word
Paste Markdown or open a .md file and download a .docx with Word's own heading styles, real numbered and bulleted lists, tables with their alignment, shaded code blocks, block quotes and clickable links. LaTeX maths between $ signs or $$ pairs becomes native Word equations you can edit.
The file is built in your browser, so README files, reports and notes are not uploaded. Because headings use Word styles, the navigation pane works at once and Word can add a table of contents in two clicks.
What Markdown to Word gives you
Word styles, not loose formatting
Headings become Heading 1 to Heading 6, so the document outline, the navigation pane and a table of contents work in Word without retouching.
Lists and tables
Ordered lists keep their start number and nesting, task lists show ticked and empty boxes, and table cells keep left, centre or right alignment.
Maths as equations
Inline $x^2$ and display $$ blocks, \( \) and \[ \], and align or matrix environments become Office Math, the format Word edits natively.
Code and quotes
Fenced code is set in Consolas on a shaded panel with its line breaks kept, and quotes get a bar down their left edge.
Page set-up
Choose A4 or Letter, the body font and the text size. A line with <!-- pagebreak --> starts a new page in Word.

Questions about Markdown to Word
Is my Markdown uploaded?
No. The Markdown is read and the Word file is written by your browser, so drafts, notes and documentation stay on your device.
Does maths come out as real equations?
Yes. LaTeX between $ signs, $$ pairs, \( \) or \[ \] becomes a native Word equation you can click into and edit, not a picture of one.
Which Markdown syntax is supported?
GitHub-flavoured Markdown: headings, bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code, links, nested ordered, bulleted and task lists, tables with alignment, block quotes, fenced and indented code, horizontal rules, line breaks and [^1] footnotes, which become real Word footnotes. Simple inline HTML such as sup, sub and br tags is understood too.
How do I write maths?
Use $...$ for maths inside a line and $$ on lines of their own for a displayed equation; \( \) and \[ \] work as well, and so do equation, align and gather environments. Prices such as $5 and $10 are left as text.
Will it open in Google Docs or LibreOffice?
Yes. The file is a standard .docx. Word gives the fullest result, LibreOffice Writer shows the equations as well, and Google Docs converts what its own equation editor supports, so check any complex formula there.
Are images included?
Images written into the Markdown as data URLs, such as data:image/png;base64, are placed in the document and scaled to the page width. Images linked from other websites are not downloaded; each becomes a link with its alt text instead.
Can I add a page break or a table of contents?
Put <!-- pagebreak --> on its own line to start a new page. For a table of contents, open the file in Word and choose References, then Table of Contents; it picks up the headings because they use Word's heading styles.
Is there a size limit?
Up to 500,000 characters per document, which is several hundred pages of text. Longer text is flagged before you download, and splitting it into chapters keeps each Word file quick to open.
Do I need Pandoc or Python to convert Markdown to Word?
No. The conversion runs in this page, so there is nothing to install and no command line. Pandoc and Python libraries suit converting many files from a script; this tool suits a document you want to convert and check now, with its maths turned into Word equations.
How do I open a .md file in Word with its formatting?
Open the .md file here, check the preview and download the .docx, then open that in Word. Headings arrive as Word heading styles, starred text as bold or italic, lists as Word lists and pipe tables as Word tables, so the Markdown symbols become formatting instead of showing as # signs and asterisks.
How do I convert a Markdown table to Word?
Paste the Markdown that holds the table, or only the table, and download the .docx. Each pipe table becomes a Word table with a bold, shaded header row that repeats when the table runs onto a new page, the alignment set by the colons in the divider row, and maths in its cells kept as equations.
